The Alma Singers, founded in 1977, celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2017 with a special concert on May 15 at The Larkhill Centre, Timperley. In 2018, a special concert was also held on Friday, June 15, at the Avenue Methodist Church, Sale. The concert featured Ian MacMillan the "Barnsley Bard" who is a poet, writer & broadcaster and Luke Carver Goss, a very versatile musician, composer & performer. The choir commissioned Ian McMillan and Luke Carver Goss to write a song, "The Nature Of A Choir", to celebrate the choir's 40 years of singing.
Musical Director, Margaret Curzon, appointed September 2009, with accompanist, Tony Heaton, leads this 27 member SATB choir. Each year the choir performs a variety of concerts, often helping charity and church groups to raise funds.
The Choir rehearses each Tuesday from 7.30 pm until 9.45 pm, September to July, at The Avenue Methodist Church, Wincham Road, Sale M33 4PL (click on the address to access the church website). The Choir has a wide repertoire of music: songs from the shows, old favourites, madrigals, folk songs and songs from Africa introduced by Margaret Curzon - everything from Bach to the Beatles and more!
